The Ski Train
1940-2009
The Ski Train ran for 69 years from downtown Denver’s Union Station, carrying loads of eager skiers and snowboarders to Winter Park each season. Known by many locals as a ‘Denver Tradition for Generations’, the train’s route headed west from Union Station, covering 56 miles and climbing over 4,000 feet in elevation. Along its journey, the Ski Train passed through 29 tunnels before reaching the famed 6.2-mile long Moffat Tunnel, the highest railroad tunnel in the United States.
Burdened with escalating liability and insurance costs, operational conflicts with freight traffic, and uncertainties posed by the redevelopment of Denver's Union Station, the Ski Train made its final run to Winter Park on March 29, 2009. While this dearly departed Colorado icon will be missed, its memories live on in the minds of many, having been responsible for introducing skiing and the joys of traveling by rail to hundreds of thousands of Coloradans over its nearly 7 decades of existence.
